Barges go up from Seattle to Alaska, even to the small villages.

This one even has cars and trucks.

It doesn't look very efficient.

Three residents

The inland waterway. Most of the way from Alaska to Vancouver can be covered inside places like this so boats can avoid the big waves.

There were several of these squares around, but I never did figure out what they're for.
