James Estep was constantly moving. He was born in Wilkes Co., NC; he entered service in the War of 1812 from Montgomery Co., TN, (28 Jan. 1814-10 May 1814) and moved to St. Clair Co., IL, after discharge. In the Spring of 1820 he moved to Sangamon Co., IL, where he owned part of the land on which Petersburg now stands. He sold or gave this to his father, Elijah, and moved to Baker's Prairie across the river, then to present Mason Co. about 1833 and to Jasper Co., MO, in 1839. His next move was to Davis Co., Iowa in 1844, then to McDonough Co., IL, in 1846, and finally, back to Mason Co. in 1848.
