Thorfinn II, 1st Earl of Caithness also went by the nick-name of Thorfinn 'the Black'. He was created 1st Earl of Caithness [Scotland] in 1014, created by his grandfather, Malcolm II. In 1034 on King Malcolm II's death, he disputed Duncan's right to the Scottish throne. In 1040 after Duncan's murder, he obtained dominion over the whole of the north of Scotland.
