Model Y Problems

Broken Stuff:

1. When you try to roll the windows up on a bumpy road, the automatic mode doesn't work. They start up and reverse partially down. Sometimes the automatic mode stops working altogether. When this happens, you can fix it by manually going all the way down and all the way up.

2. Sometimes the window won't go down to allow the door to open (from the outside). This usually happens in the morning after the car's been sitting, but not always. Sometimes it happens to all the doors (and I have to use a phone to roll down the window to open a door), and sometimes only on the driver door. I can reach across to the window controls in the car and lower the driver window. Using vent on the phone will not not open a window that's keeping the door from opening, but will lower the other windows to allow those doors to open.

3. The front right wheel well rim pops loose sometimes when I go through a big mud puddle in the road. I can pound it back on with my hand.

4. The display computer crashes, goes weird, and locks up or blanks out occasionally. It usually reboots, but recurs after a short time until I reset pressing the steering wheel buttons for 30 seconds. This started 2-3 updates ago.

5. The key fob doesn't always open the door when I walk up to the car. When this happens, pushing the button twice won't open the door either unless I wait for a while. It might be related to sentry mode, because it usually records a sentry event when this happens. Please don't tell me to use my phone. I don't always carry a phone. A $150 key fob should work.

6. The key fob doesn't always allow the car to "start" when the fob is inside the car. It -- gets a message saying to swipe the key card. Usually it will eventually work if I wave it around. Sometimes it starts working if I just put my hand on it. This happens no matter where key fob happens to be -- in my pocket, in or on the console, in the passenger seat, etc. Once it never would work and I had to use a key card to start the car. Please don't tell me to use my phone or a key card.console light. A $150 key fob should work.

7. The rear door makes some noise sometimes if I use the automatic open. When I close it manually too fast, it sounds like it's about to break. The right strut may have a problem.

8. Whatever keeps running after I get out of the car is loud, and has been getting louder.

9. Sometimes when I press on the charging door to open it, it won't open, even though the car is unlocked.

10. When I turn on the cruise control, it does not start at the current speed. It starts at what the car thinks is the speed limit, plus the relative speed set for the speed warning. For example, one day I had the speed warning set to 10 mph over the speed limit. The speed warning was turned off. I pulled onto Park Street in Pryor, OK, which has a 20 mph speed limit. I was going about 20, and enabled the cruise control. The car thinks the speed limit at that location is 35, so when I enabled the cruise control the car started to accelerate to 45 mph in a 20 mph zone. I have to set the speed warning to zero and not use it. Even so, when I set the cruise control when I enter a construction zone with a temporary speed limit, the car starts to accelerate to the original speed limit. It seems a little dangerous the way it is now. There should be a way to turn on the cruise with "set" in addition to or instead of "resume", and "set" should be the default.

11. There is a message saying the thumb drive is too slow for the dash cam, but it's more than fast enough. It's a Sandisk SDCZ-800 64gb.

Software bugs and suggestions:

1. When I am backing out of the driveway and change the climate or audio, the backup camera goes away. I have to put it in park and reverse again, or push a bunch of buttons on the screen to get it back on.

2. I have the parking assistance chimes turned off because they make noise when I back out of the garage and go through drive-thrus. They turn themselves back on occasionally -- maybe after updates?

3. The seat belt warning should start making noise when the car starts moving, not when I initially put my foot on the brake pedal.

4. The car doesn't work well with podcasts and audiobooks. Whenever I get out of the car, the audio volume goes lower but the podcast keeps playing, so I miss part of it. If I go to the garage open a passenger door, the podcast starts playing and I miss some more of it. This happens even if the phone is in the house.

5. When I open a passenger door to put something into or out of the car, climate control (or something noisy) starts running. This should not happen with passenger doors or the rear door, and I would personally prefer that it not happen with the driver door.

6. Some audio commands that should be there are not, or at least I can't find a proper combination of words that work. "Enable floor vent" will enable the floor vents. However, I cannot find any combination of words that enable the face vents. The cabin fan is really hit and miss. "Fan 3" should set the fan on 3, but numbers don't seem to work. Other words produce unpredictable results. I cannot find any audio command for the homelink.

7. It would save a button press if the homelink would drop down after you arrive home like it does when you're leaving.

8. Automatic homelink would work much better in my situation if I could put in a range of up to 500 feet. I realize it may not work that far, but the current limit is too close to the door and I'd like to set it near its max range.

In this 20 mph zone, the cruise control starts at 35 + relative speed warning.
