John was born about 1827 in Kentucky. John's father was James Clifford and his mother was Rachel Azby. His paternal grandparents were Edward Clifford and Ruth; his maternal grandparents were Lindsey Azby and Jane. He had a brother and five sisters, named Levi, Elizabeth, Huldah, Sarah, Ann and Frances. He was the second oldest of the seven children.General Notes
