John was born in 1838 in Franklin County, Ohio.  John's father was Joshua Cole and his mother was Margaret Clover.  His maternal grandparents were Henry Clover and Catherine Ambrose. He had a brother and two sisters, named Thomas, Rose and Elizabeth.  He was the second youngest of the four children.
