Henry, known as the Fowler, was born in 0876 in Saxony, Germany. The Fowler's father was Duke Otto ("the Illustrious") of Saxony and his mother was Hedwig Princess of Germany. His paternal grandparents were Duke Ludolph of Saxony and Oda Billung of Saxony; his maternal grandparents were King Arnulf of Germany Holy Roman Emperor and Oda of Bavaria. He was an only child.
