Grant was born on September 15th, 1936 in Wilmington, Delaware.  Grant's father was George Clark Hering Jr and his mother was Helen Barnitz.  His paternal grandfather was George Clark Hering. He has two sisters named Helen and Jane.  He is the youngest of the three children.
