James was born about 1857. James' father was John McFerron and his mother was Catherine Van Pelt. His paternal grandparents were Andrew McFerron and Martha McDonald; his maternal grandparents were Isaac Van Pelt and Rachel Lough. He had two sisters named Rachel and Martha.
