Manerva was born about 1847 in Ohio. Manerva's father was George Washington Medaris and her mother was Matilda Ann McDavitt. Her paternal grandparents were Oliver Medaris and Wilmuth Redmond. She had six brothers and two sisters, named Zachariah, Charles, Gideon, Thomas, Chemiah, Eli, Ruth and Martha. She was the oldest of the nine children. She had six half-brothers and six half-sisters, named William, Oliver, Elijah, Levi, Jesse, George, Synthia, Hester, Lib, Elizabeth, Matilda and Mary.-
