Hendy was born in 1876.  Hendy's father was Martin Vanburen Medearis and his mother was Margaret J Robinson.  His paternal grandparents were John Wesley Medaris and Sirrelda Barnett; his maternal grandparents were William Robinson and Sarah Medaris. He had five brothers and four sisters, named David, L, William, Emery, Solomon, Jenny, Minnie, Louisa and Rosa.  He died  due to lung fever at the age of 5 on March 26th, 1881.
