Mary's father was Joseph Schmitz and her mother was Gertrude Schuermann.  Her maternal grandparents were William Schuermann and Gertrude Blumbach. She had eight brothers named William, Edward, August, Carl, Conrad, Frankie, Johanna and Joseph.
