Foulques, known as the Rude, was born about 1043 in Anjou, France.  The Rude's father was Count Geoffrey ("Ferreol") de Gatinais and his mother was Ermengarde de Anjou.  His paternal grandparents were Count Geoffrey I ("Ferreol") de Gatinais and Beatrix (Beatrice) de Macon; his maternal grandparents were King Foulques III ("the Black") de Anjou and Hildegarde. He had a half-sister named Hildegarde.  He died on April 14th, 1109 in Anjou, France.
