Adelaide was born about 0819 in Tours, Indre et Loire, France. Adelaide's father was Louis I ("the Pious") Holy Roman Emperor and her mother was Ermengarde de Hesbaye. Her paternal grandparents were Charlemagne Holy Roman Emperor and Hildegarde; her maternal grandfather was Count Ingerman I of Hesbaye. She had two brothers and a sister, named Louis, the Bald and Princess. She was the second youngest of the four children. She had a half-brother and a half-sister, named Lothar and Gisela.
