Robert J Herndon 
Robert was born on March 13th, 1835. Robert's father was David M Herndon and his mother was Mahala T Snead. His paternal grandparents were Joseph Herndon and Susanna Haislip. He had six brothers and three sisters, named Howell, Elisha, David, Adam, Reuben, Joseph, Mary, Mahala and Susan. Private in Capt. Cocke's, Capt. Ancells, Capt. Snead's and later in Capt. John L. Massie's Co.; captured at Waterloo S July 1863; subscribed oath of allegiance to U.S. at Ft. Delaware; had light complexion, dark hair, gray eyes; was 5' 6" tall. Married the widow of his deceased brother Elisha.
