Caroline was born in 1886 in Spencer, Owen County, Indiana.  Caroline's father was A Zecharia Smith and her mother was Elizabeth Ann Ring.  Her maternal grandfather was Lafayette Ring and her maternal grandmother is <Unknown>. She had a brother and three sisters, named James, Mary, Theresa and Nora.  She was the youngest of the five children.
