Mathias was born on April 5th, 1810 in Berkeley County, Virginia.1   Mathias' father was Rev. William Hanby Ambrose and his mother was Susanna B. Crum.  His paternal grandfather was William Henry Ambrose and his paternal grandmother is Sarah; his maternal grandparents were Christiana Schmidt and Rev. Christian Crum Sr. He had five brothers and four sisters, named Jacob, George, William, Christian, Lewis, Elizabeth, Christena, Susan and Catherine.  He was the fourth youngest of the ten children.  He died at the age of 73 on November 9th, 1883 in Logan County, Illinois.

Mathias' family

Mathias and Sarah were married in a religious ceremony on November 23rd, 1837 in Ohio.  They had six sons and a daughter, named Levi, Lewis, Henry, George, William, John and Lydia.
