George was born on February 8th, 1887.  George's father was William Jasper Johnson and his mother was Mariah (Bell) Isabell Dougherty.  His maternal grandparents were John Dougherty and Sarah Groves. He had three brothers and five sisters, named Guy, Aaron, Fred, Olive, Lulu, Johnson, Dora and Sarah.  He was the youngest of the nine children.
