Johnson was born in 1875.  Johnson's father was William Jasper Johnson and her mother was Mariah (Bell) Isabell Dougherty.  Her maternal grandparents were John Dougherty and Sarah Groves. She had four brothers and four sisters, named Guy, Aaron, Fred, George, Olive, Lulu, Dora and Sarah.  She was the fifth oldest of the nine children.
