Alma was born about 1921. Alma's father was James Porter Naanes and her mother was Florence May Ellis. Her paternal grandfather was Hugh Naanes and her paternal grandmother is Eliza Jane Davis. She had a brother and a sister, named John and Vera. She is the second oldest of the three children. She has a half-sister named Ruby.
