Massey was born on May 19th, 1821 in Guilford County, North Carolina. Massey's father was James Davis Medaris and his mother was Levisa King. His paternal grandparents were Oliver Medaris and Wilmuth Redmond. He had eight brothers and a sister, named Jonathan, Ithamer, Riley, Salathiel, Stephen, Nathaniel, James, Abraham and Teancy. He was the fifth youngest of the ten children. He had a half-sister named Mary.-
