John was born on July 27th, 1841.  John's father was Amasa Steward and his mother was Regina Medaris.  His maternal grandparents were Oliver Medaris and Wilmuth Redmond. He had four brothers and five sisters, named William, David, Amasa, Robert, Eliza, Elizabeth, Delilah, Mary and Nancy.  He was the youngest of the ten children.  He died at the age of 90 on January 18th, 1932.
