Alice was born about 1858 in Frederick County, Virginia.1   Alice's father was Christian C. Ambrose and her mother was Martha A. Cook.  Her paternal grandparents were John Bell Ambrose Sr and Elizabeth "Betsy" Crum. She had two brothers and two sisters, named John, Charles, Mary and Laura.  She was the second youngest of the five children.
