Francis was born in August 1841 in Champaign County, Ohio.1   Francis' father was Peter Ambrose and his mother is Mary Glenn.  His paternal grandparents were Frederick Ambrose and Jane "Jennie" Tanner. He had a brother and a sister, named John and Maretha.  He was the oldest of the three children.  He died in California.
