William was born about 1822 in Maryland.1   William's father was Solomon Ambrose and his mother was Sarah Wolfe.  His paternal grandfather was William Henry Ambrose and his paternal grandmother is Sarah. He had three brothers and a sister, named Ambrose, Samuel, George and Sarah.  He was the second oldest of the five children.
