James was born about 1689 in Lancaster County, Virginia.  James' father was Abraham Currell and his mother was Rebecca Horton.  His paternal grandparents were Teague Currell and Ellinore; his maternal grandparents were Tobias Horton and Elizabeth Flowers. He had three brothers and a sister, named Abraham, Isaac, Jacob and Elinor. He had two half-brothers named Nicholas and William.
