Hester was born on September 1st, 1859 in Spencer, Owen County, Indiana.  Hester's father was Alexander Davis and her mother was Jane Buskirk.  Her paternal grandparents were George Davis and Rozilla; her maternal grandparents were John Buskirk and Mary Terry. She had four brothers and six sisters, named Norman, Salatis, Salathiel, William, Elizabeth, Charles, Sarah, Samilda, Davis and Marietta.  She was the third youngest of the eleven children.
