Eli was born about 1809 in Napoleon, Ripley County, Indiana.  Eli's father was David McKee and his mother was Lydia Billings. He had five brothers and a sister, named Samuel, Edmond, Thomas, Joseph, Simon and Rebecca.  He was the second oldest of the seven children.
