John was born about 1846 in Ohio.1   John's father was Wilson J. Neil and his mother was Elizabeth Ambrose.  His maternal grandparents were Frederick Ambrose and Mary Ann Poff. He had a sister named Elizabeth.  He was the older of the two children.
