Joan was born in 1265.  Joan's father was King Edward I ("Longshanks") of England and his mother was Eleanor Ponthieu of Castile and Leon.  His paternal grandparents were King Henry III of England and Eleanor of Provence. He had four brothers and eleven sisters, named John, Henry, Alfonso, Edward, Eleanor, Katherine, Joan, Margaret, Berengaria, Mary, Isabella, Alice, Elizabeth, Beatrice and Blanche.  He was the second oldest of the sixteen children. He had two half-brothers and a half-sister, named Thomas, Edmund and Eleanor.
