Edgar was born in Woodbine, Kansas.  Edgar's father was Henry William Schuermann and his mother was Lydia Freitag.  His paternal grandparents were William Schuermann and Gertrude Blumbach. He had two brothers and two sisters, named Henry, WC, Minnie and Gertrude. He had two half-brothers and two half-sisters, named Fritz, Laverne, Lorena and Millicent.
