Gertrude was born in Woodbine, Kansas.  Gertrude's father was Henry William Schuermann and her mother was Lydia Freitag.  Her paternal grandparents were William Schuermann and Gertrude Blumbach. She had three brothers and a sister, named Henry, WC, Edgar and Minnie. She had two half-brothers and two half-sisters, named Fritz, Laverne, Lorena and Millicent.
