Joannah was born on February 17th, 1725 in Farnam, Richmond County, Virginia.  Joannah's father was John Tillery and her mother was Margaret.  Her paternal grandparents were Henry Tillery and Mary Wascale. She had four brothers and two sisters, named Samuel, Rawleigh, Tillery, George, Elizabeth and Maryanne.  She was the youngest of the seven children.
