Tillery was born in 1706 in Farnam, Richmond County, Virginia.  Tillery's father was John Tillery and his mother was Margaret.  His paternal grandparents were Henry Tillery and Mary Wascale. He had three brothers and three sisters, named Samuel, Rawleigh, George, Elizabeth, Maryanne and Joannah.  He was the third oldest of the seven children.
