Gilbert, known as the Red, was born on September 2nd, 1243 in Christchurch, Hertfordshire, England.  The Red's father was Richard de Clare 5th Earl of Gloucester and his mother was Matilda de Lacy.  His paternal grandparents were Gilbert de Clare 4th Earl of Gloucester and <Unknown>; his maternal grandparents were John de Lacy, 1st Earl of Lincoln and Margaret de Quincey. He had a brother named Thomas.  He died at the age of 52 on December 7th, 1295 in Monmouth Castle, Monmouth, Monmouthshire, Wales.  He was buried in Tewkesbury Abbey, Tewkesbury, Gloucestershire, England..
