John was born about 1833 in Washington County, Maryland.1   John's father was Nelson Ambrose and his mother was Wiley Barton.  His paternal grandparents were Daniel Ambrose and Sophia Marquart. He had three brothers and a sister, named Nelson, Richard, James and Rebecca.  He was the oldest of the five children.  He died before 1880.1
