Walter was born about 1856 in Ohio.1 Walter's father was William M. Ambrose and his mother was Susan. His paternal grandparents were Jacob Ambrose and Elizabeth. He had two brothers and a sister, named William, Charles and Flora. He was the second youngest of the four children. He had a half-brother and a half-sister, named Judson and Nettie.
