Martha was born in 1850.  Martha's father was Archibald Carmichael and her mother was Elizabeth Sparks.  Her paternal grandfather was Alexander Carmichael. She had four brothers and a sister, named John, William, Joseph, Billy Wes and Matilda.  She was the third oldest of the six children.
