Matilda was born in 1852.  Matilda's father was Archibald Carmichael and her mother was Elizabeth Sparks.  Her paternal grandfather was Alexander Carmichael. She had four brothers and a sister, named John, William, Joseph, Billy Wes and Martha.  She was the third youngest of the six children.  She died at the age of 71 in 1923.
