Catherine was born on February 28th, 1797 in Orange County, Virginia.  Catherine's father was Edward Herndon Jr. and her mother was Nancy Ann Rucker.  Her paternal grandparents were Edward Herndon and Mary Ann Gaines. She had four brothers and seven sisters, named Dillard, Thomas, William, Edward, Mary, Elizabeth, Sarah, Frances, Nancy, Rachel and Lucy.
