James was born on January 3rd, 1789 in Orange County, Virginia.  James' father was William Pendelton Herndon and his mother was Mary Rucker.  His paternal grandparents were Edward Herndon and Mary Ann Gaines. He had nine brothers and three sisters, named Thomas, Edward, Ezekiel, Abner, Henry, Manson, Joel, Thomas, William, Elizabeth, Mary and Rachel.  He died at the age of 68 in 1857 in Madison County, Virginia.
