Leota was born in Woodbine, Kansas.  Leota's father was William Moritz Schuermann and her mother was Louisa Freitag.  Her paternal grandparents were William Schuermann and Gertrude Blumbach. She had five brothers and two sisters, named Carl, William, Theodore, George, Clarence, Alma and Myrtle.
