David Higgins Van Valkenburgh 
David was born on May 23rd, 1823 in Prattsburg, Steuben County, New York. David's father was Jacob Van Valkenburgh and his mother was Mary (Polly) Bethia Higgins. His paternal grandparents were Bartholomeus Van Valkenburgh and Catherine Pruyn; his maternal grandparents were David Higgins and Eunice Gilbert. He had eight brothers and three sisters, named Robert, Bartholomew, Lucius, Franklin, Gerrit, George, Edward, George, Kate, Gertrude and Mary. He was the second oldest of the twelve children. He died at the age of 39 on May 31st, 1862 in Seven Oaks, Virginia. He was buried in Seven Oaks, Virginia.General Notes
David Higgins Van Valkenburgh, born in 1823, was sheriff of Manitowoc county at one time, was major of the First New York artillery in the Civil war, and at the battle of Fair Oaks, in 1862, after both his superior officers had been killed, he took command and was shot and instantly killed.
