Jacob was born on May 28th, 1795 in Kinderhook, Columbia County, New York and his christening took place on June 21st, 1795 in Dutch Reformed Church, Kinderhook, Columbia County, New York.  Jacob's father was Bartholomeus Van Valkenburgh and his mother was Catherine Pruyn.  His paternal grandparents were Jacob Van Valkenburgh and Cathalyntie Leggett; his maternal grandparents were Harmon Pruyn and Jannetje Goes. He had four brothers and six sisters, named Harman, Bartholomew, Francis, William, Elizabeth, Jannetje, Bata, Maria, Catherine and Lydia.  He was the fourth oldest of the eleven children. He had a half-brother and a half-sister, named Jacob and Catlinje.  He died at the age of 83 on March 3rd, 1879 in Jacksonville, Florida.  He was buried in St. Nicholas Cemetery, South Jacksonville, Florida.
