John C. Ambrose 
John was born on May 1st, 1818 in Berkeley County, Virginia.1 John's father was Jacob Ambrose and his mother was Elizabeth. His paternal grandfather was William Henry Ambrose and his paternal grandmother is Sarah. He had three brothers and three sisters, named Peter, Jacob, William, Mary, Margaret and Rosannah. He was the third oldest of the seven children. He died at the age of 79 on April 7th, 1898 in Mason City, Illinois. He was buried in Mason City, Illinois.1 1 General Notes
Moved to Champaign County, Ohio in 1831, then to Quincy, Logan County, Ohio. Worked as a carpenter, then went into the hotel business. In April, 1861, he sold out and went to Mason City, Mason County, Illinois. He purchased 40 acres to farm, then in Nov 1864, he opened the first restaurant in Mason City, which he ran for 3 years.
