Benjamin was born about 1845 in Maryland.1   Benjamin's father was Thomas Prather Jr and his mother was Susan Elizabeth Ambrose.  His maternal grandparents were Daniel Ambrose and Sophia Marquart. He had three brothers and three sisters, named Richard, Thomas, Daniel, Mary, Sarah and Ruth.  He was the third youngest of the seven children.
