Ruth was born about 1848 in Maryland.1   Ruth's father was Thomas Prather Jr and her mother was Susan Elizabeth Ambrose.  Her maternal grandparents were Daniel Ambrose and Sophia Marquart. She had four brothers and two sisters, named Richard, Thomas, Benjamin, Daniel, Mary and Sarah.  She was the second youngest of the seven children.
