Richard was born about 1837 in Maryland.1   Richard's father was Thomas Prather Jr and his mother was Susan Elizabeth Ambrose.  His maternal grandparents were Daniel Ambrose and Sophia Marquart. He had three brothers and three sisters, named Thomas, Benjamin, Daniel, Mary, Sarah and Ruth.  He was the oldest of the seven children.
