Mary was born about 1855.  Mary's father was David Marion Lyon and her mother was Sarah C. Shaffer.  Her paternal grandparents were William Lyon and Elizabeth Tweedy. She had four brothers and three sisters, named George, Algernon, Selina, William, Margret, Sadie and Lucie.  She was the second oldest of the eight children.
