William was born about 1869.  William's father was David Marion Lyon and his mother was Sarah C. Shaffer.  His paternal grandparents were William Lyon and Elizabeth Tweedy. He had three brothers and four sisters, named George, Algernon, Selina, Margret, Mary, Sadie and Lucie.  He was the youngest of the eight children.
